Lets talk Silver Powder. Firstly… what the hell is it???
The Mario Badescu Silver Powder is listed on their website as an acne product, and is specifically for combatting blackheads.
I want to make one thing clear first, before I bought this I read so many mixed reviews, some absolutely amazing and some saying the powder did absolutely nothing for them. Please don’t think this product will remove blackheads – it wont. The only way to get rid of blackheads is extraction, or using a something with a BHA ingredient, such as salicylic acid. However if you have already done the work at clearing your blackheads and pours, or use this along side the process then this is an amazing product to keep the pours clear and prevent any junk from getting all clogged up again.
Personally, I don’t think Mario Badescu make this very clear, and I can 100% see why people have bought this product thinking its going to remove blackheads from the pores all on its own. This is what that say about their silver powder;
Decongest and clarify complexions with our powerful, oil-absorbent powder. Natural minerals like Kaolin, Calcium Carbonate, and Zinc Oxide help purify pores and reduce stubborn blackheads. Excess oil, buildup, and pore-clogging impurities are drawn out, revealing visibly clearer, healthier-looking skin.
When you just read this over I think this sounds like its going to remove your blackheads, hey presto, gone! Because they use words like ‘decongest’, ‘purify’ and say ‘pore-clogging impurities are drawn out’. Its only when you break down this clever little paragraph you see that actually, they aren’t claiming the Silver Powder will remove your blackheads, it just sounds like they are. They say the Silver Powder will ‘help purify pores and reduce stubborn blackheads’. They also say you will be left with ‘visibly clearer, healthier-looking skin’. See the clever wording? Not ‘clear’ skin, ‘clearer’. Not ‘remove’ stubborn blackheads, ‘reduce’.
The Silver Powder only has 3 ingredients! Heres what they are and how they are working to help keep the blackheads from building up;
- CALCIUM CARBONATE – This absorbs oil, your skin produces oil as a natural moisturiser, but when your skin produces too much oil it can build up and lead to your pores getting clogged… resulting in blackheads and acne! If you have oily skin don’t stop using a moisturiser! It might seem like the logical answer to cut out putting anything like that on your skin, but usually the reason you’re producing too much oil because your skin needs the moisture. If you tackle that by moisturising, your skin should go ‘phew! I’m nicely moisturised and can stop producing so much oil!’ see what I mean?
- KAOLIN – Kaolin is a natural occurring clay mineral, so the consistency of the silver powder when mixed with water is down to this ingredient. It is often used in face masks for oily skin because Kaolin, like Calcium Carbonate, absorbs excess oil. Kaolin also helps to cleanse and exfoliate debris and skin cells on the surface of the skin.
- ZINC OXIDE – Zinc Oxide is usually used as an agent in sun cream and nappy rash cream! Ever wondered why Sudocrem is good on spots? Zinc Oxide is the answer! In the case of Silver Powder, its used to decrease the production of sebum (part of what blackheads are made of) and speed up the healing process by decreasing inflammation.
I really like using products that don’t have many ingredients so I was really happy to see this!
This is how I use Silver Powder – 1. Cleanse 2. Exfoliate 3. Silver Powder 4. Remove with toner 4. Tone 5. Moisturise.
So after I have cleansed with my Mario Badescu Acne Facial Cleanser (which includes the BHA ingredient salicylic acid), exfoliated with my Mario Badescu Almond and Honey Face Scrub, I wet a cotton pad, and I mean dripping wet, and the dip the pad directly into the powder, and apply to everywhere I have blackheads. I put the powder on my nose, in-between my eyebrows and on my chin. You need to get quite a bit of the powder on areas you need, it should be a paste like consistency. Another way I have read people apply is to mix the powder and water together in a little bowl or egg cup, and apply with a brush onto the face – I haven’t tried this way but id imagine its just as easy! Leave on for 10 mins, remove with a toner, it literally just dissolves off so easily, and use 1-2 times per week!
Side note: Be careful when you open the seal on this product, its full to the brim of powder that will go EVERYWHERE if you’re not careful! Also… it isn’t silver. Just sayin’…
Now, I do have blackheads that need removing, and like I said at the beginning of this post, the Silver Powder wont remove them on its own. But they will help keep them from coming back, building up, or getting worse. Because I have been really consistent with my new skin care routine the past few weeks I feel like my blackheads are gradually getting broken down with a combination of face scrubs, products containing different types of acids and my Pixi glow tonic. Therefore, even though the results might not be astonishing just yet, they are getting better! I’m definitely noticing a difference and can see that my blackheads are being broken down and I am sure that the Silver Powder is helping with this. So there we have it! Im going to continue using the Silver Powder as part of my skin care routine and will hopefully see even better results over the next few weeks/months!
