I have been using eBay for years, and its something I always assume everyone else uses too because its second nature to me. But every so often it will come up in conversation and a lot of people will talk about how they don’t know how to use it, or they use Depop because its easier then eBay – but once you know what to do eBay is super easy!
The reason I prefer it to other selling app’s or websites is because more often than not I don’t even know how much I want for the things I’m selling! I might have a ball park, but most of the time if somebody actually asks how much I want to sell an item for I don’t have a figure, whatever I can get for it is better than nothing. Anything that doesn’t sell will go to the charity shop anyway so it isn’t like it will get thrown out.
Lets start with the basics, you will need to make an eBay account, and a PayPal account – this is really easy, and the websites walk you through it!
Some things I know I should sell because I’m never going to wear them, but its hard to let go!
eBay used to charge for listings, but now its free unless you are adding the following things;
- Reserve price (eBay take 4% of the reserve price, the maximum you can reserve an item for is £150. Your item wont sell for less than this, but bidding can continue past the reserve price)
- ‘Buy it now’ price (50p per item. For those of us who do know how much we want for an item!)
- Subtitle (£1 per item. Personally I think this is super unnecessary and don’t know why anyone would pay to add a subtitle?)
- Gallery plus (£2.50 per item. This is just a viewing option for the buyer, when they hover over your item the photos will pop up large on their screen so they can flick through without clicking on the item. This is free if you’re selling clothes, shoes, accessories, cars, motorcycles & vehicles, home, furniture & DIY or pet supplies)
- Listing your item in 2 categories (35p per item. If its a piece of clothing that is also a collectible, you could list it under both categories so that its easy to find for bidders)
- Schedule (6p per item. You can schedule 20 items for free per month)
- Listing Designer items (this will be free from 1st April 2018, so just wait until after that date to list your designers if you want to avoid the small charge of 30p per item)
- Motor’s such as cars have their own fee’s too, I can’t even imagine selling a car on eBay but whatever floats your boat!
As well as these fee’s, they also take 10% off of your final selling value. This is capped up to £250… on the off chance you sell something that pulls in over £2,500! At the end of the month you will receive an invoice from eBay with the amount you owe them, or you can pay it as soon as you want after your auctions have ended!
Anything! You can sell everything from earrings to properties on eBay so anything goes! But not everything sells. Thats the tricky part. I mostly sell clothes, I’m constantly clearing out my wardrobe and every so often I will try on everything I own and think ‘if I was in a shop, would I buy this right now?’. If it’s a no, it goes in the eBay/charity shop pile!
Brands such as Topshop, Missguided, House of CB, Oh Polly and Asos always sell. For some reason though, popular brands like Zara, H&M, BooHoo and River Island never bring in any bids. I don’t know why, I’ve never really worked it out, but theres been quite a few times that I’ve listed Zara or H&M items still with the tags on and they have gone unsold or literally gone for 99p when I’ve bought the items for £50+ full price!
Cosmetic’s sell but there are a looooooot of fakes on eBay so make sure to prove the authenticity of your items as much as you can. Shoes and bags do well too, just make sure they are in good condition before selling – although I’ve seen Loubs in a hoooooorrribbblleee state still sell for way more than they are worth! Collectables sell on eBay too, my Dad collects comics, figurines and football programs so I’ve had to look for these things countless times and cannot believe what people pay for that stuff.
I would avoid selling iPhones/smart phones or apple laptops if you can, a lot of the people who buy these are scammers and just absolutely waste your time! Obviously some people are legit but it can be more hassle than its worth, if you have to sell these items on eBay please be cautious.
HOW SHOULD I DESCRIBE MY ITEM?
Use buzz words on the header/title, If your selling a tight fitting dress use words like ‘bodycon’, if its a loose silky material put ‘slinky dress’, think about the words you use when searching for clothing online and put in whatever words you can think of! I have inserted a few examples below of some things I have previously sold on eBay, and how I worded the listing. eBay has a no tolerance policy to using brands to liken your product to, such as ‘Gucci STYLE bag’, or ‘House of CB STYLE bodycon dress’. They will remove your item and you have to do a quick test to make sure you know the rules! Not worth your time!
Because I usually put all the desirable info in the title, I make the description quite simple, with the brand, size, colour, any features the item has, and then maybe any additional information that the buyer might need to be aware of.
Here’s a few items I listed previously, and what I used as the headers.
And heres the descriptions I used!
I always put at least 4 photos up from different angles. I just think that when I’m buying something that I can’t see, no matter what website its on, 2 photos is never enough, 3 makes me think ‘hmmmm now I can kind of imagine it on me’… 4 photos, and I’m there, I’ve got it! I don’t know if anyone else thinks that way too, but generally the more photos the better because you can really visualize it on yourself then. I always take 1 photos of the front, 1 of the back, 1 from an angle of the side, and then 1 of any detail the item has, and then more if I think there are more features that need to be shown. I also put a photo of the item worn either on a model from the website, or on myself if it is something I have worn before/that fits me. For example, the Oh Polly item I was selling was too big for me when I ordered it, but I missed the date to return it. There was no point in taking a photo of me wearing it, because it didn’t show the item at its best. So, I used the model from the website instead.
HOW TO PRICE YOUR ITEM?
This depends on you really. For me, because I never know how much I want to sell my items for and they are things that will go to the charity shop if they don’t sell anyway, I start all my listings at 99p. I do find that anything I list at 99p will get triple the amount of ‘watchers’ than the items I start at, for example, £10. I think when you start an item at the minimum price you get more people watching the item because they think they are going to get a bargain, and then you end up getting more bids because the buyers can see that you started the item low, and so the rising price and the bids are purely down to demand for the item, rather than you wanting to make money. Its kind of like reverse psychology I guess!
Its rare that anything actually does go for 99p but you know what? You win some, you loose some. Sometimes things do go for the minimum amount but thats just the way it goes. Lets think of it this way, you search ‘TOPSHOP DRESS’, and you don’t want to spend more than £15. There are two similar items, one starting at 99p and one starting at £10… which would you bid on? The 99p one right? Because its going to take longer for the bids to accumulate before it gets to £15. Now, how many other people are thinking the same thing? Ahhhhh, yep, everyone! So then the item that started at 99p ends up getting more interest, and selling for more than the one starting at £10. TA-DAAAAAAA!
You can also start your item at a certain price, and then put a ‘buy it now’ price or a reserve. For example, start the item at 99p but put a ‘buy it now’ price at £15, when someone wants the item they can click that button, even if other people have been bidding the auction ends, and the buyer gets that item for £15 + postage. Or, you can start the item at 99p, but set a reserve at £15, so buyers can bid amongst themselves but nobody will win unless the item gets to £15+.
HOW LONG DO YOU HAVE YOUR ITEM ON SALE FOR?
You have a few options here, some I would 100% not recommend, and some I would. First, Auction or fixed price? Do you want people to bid on your item, from the moment the item is listed, until the item ends? or do you want buyers to be able to click ‘Buy It Now’ and thats it, the listing ends. If you know how much you want, you don’t want to go any lower, and you aren’t bothered about potentially getting more, then go for the fixed price option. It might mean you get a quicker sale too, it depends how long it takes for somebody to see the item and want it at that price. If you know what you want your item to start at, but your not sure how much you think its worth, then go for the auction option, you can start it at whatever price you want and buyers can bid right up until your item runs out of time.
Then you move onto the length of time you want the item to be on sale for. This can be from 1-10 days for auction listings, and 3-‘good til cancelled’ days for fixed price listings. Unless you are desperate for a super fast sale, and you think enough people will see the item to get the sale, than I wouldn’t recommend ever listing your item for just 1 day. Maybe if you need a sale QUICK and you have a pair of Yeezy trainers this might work, but otherwise stay away from a 1 day listing. Potentially 3 days, but still, risky. I think the sweet spot is 5-7 days. I currently have some things on sale and have put them on eBay for 10 days, but I have a logical reason for this!
The most popular day and time on eBay is Sunday, around 6-8pm. I always try to end my posts on a Sunday around this time. Are you on eBay on a Tuesday at 11am? No? Well neither is anyone else, so when your item is approaching the end of its time, you won’t see many people trying to get their last bids in on your item. But Sunday at 7.30? Everyone is online!
So, this is why my items are currently running for 10 days! I photographed and set up all my listings on a Thursday, I didn’t want to put my items up for 3 days, but 5 and 7 meant they were finishing mid week, so I put them on for 10 days so they could finish on a Sunday.
I would definitely recommend using the schedule tool! Make sure it ends on a Sunday evening and you can’t go too far wrong.
eBay has 100% upped its game when it comes to delivery! So, before, eBay didn’t tell you how much it actually cost you to post an item, you had to go on to the Royal Mail website and find out yourself, yeah, not much effort, but if you were new to eBay and only just figuring it out then it was just something else to add onto your workload! Nowadays you can select which service you will be sending your item via, and eBay will calculate how much that will cost you – so you know how much to charge the buyer. Some people will round up the delivery cost so that if their item doesn’t sell for what they want, they make a little bit of extra cash on the delivery charge. I think buyers have got very smart to this and now most people, including myself, just put the postage charge as the same price it will cost me to send it. It also encourages buyers to bid on your items over somebody else because its clear you aren’t trying to squeeze every penny out of them!
eBay also offers their own international service now. Before, you would have to arrange with the buyer before the purchase was made if they wanted international postage , and set a new delivery fee for them. Now, if they are an international buyer, they pay the same postage you set, and then you send your item to a UK eBay address, where eBay then take over the shipping process and send the parcel wherever it is going. They charge the customer separately for this. Easy!
