SAND & SKY PINK CLAY MASK REVIEW

Hi Lovelies!

As part of my lovely leaving present from my last job I received the highly anticipated Sand & Sky pink clay mask, and as we all know, I’m a sucker for skin care and any kind of mask I can get my hand’s on, so I was super excited to finally try this out!

A few months ago the blogging world and Instagram went nuts for Sand & Sky, the brand went in HARD with their social media campaign and I feel like every single influencer I follow had been sent this pretty little blue pot of pink clay. They really hit the spot with their packaging – who wouldn’t want to have it sat on their dresser or in the bathroom? It definitely stands out from your average mask packaging and came with huge promises of glowing skin and reduced pores. I love a mask in a pot!

The packaging of my Sand & Sky purifying pink clay mask is the older version, their new one comes in a pink pot but its the same product inside.

This is their claim;

Results to Expect: Our mask will mop up surface oil, and help remove oily debris from deep in the pores. Vitamin A helps to regulate the skin’s oil production. Your skin will feel clean and mattified after each use. Over time, skin may become less oily, and pores less obvious.*

The Sand & Sky purifying pink clay mask is cruelty free which is always a bonus, and the product itself is packed full of good ingredients. The main ingredients that pack a punch are as follows…

  • Australian Pink Clay – This is supposed to draw out toxins from the skin and purify and tighten the pores
  • Pomegranate and Mangosteen – Boost celular turnover…. in human talk please?basically these ingredients should speed up the rate in which your skin sheds the dead skin cells and creates new, younger cells, which in turn should make your skin appear brighter and more youthful!
  • Witch Hazel and Kelp – Witch Hazel is added to tighten pores and sooth irritation, and the Kelp is in there to speed up the skin repair process, which should leave your skin feeling smooth
  • Kakadu Plum and Liquorice – Kakadu Plum is the world richest source of Vitamin C, personally, I looooooooove Vitamin C products so this is a massive YES from me, Vitamin C makes your skin so bright and glowy whats not to love! Apparently when the Kakadu Plum and Liqourice are combined they work together to combat pigmentation clusters (which I have on my cheeks) and leave your skin clear and glowing

Here is a full list of the ingredients, incase you’re wondering… Kaolin (Australian clay), Water (Aqua), Bentonite, Aloe barbadensis (Aloe Vera), Leaf Juice ORANIC, Retinyl palmitate (Vitamin A), dl-alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Terminalia Ferdinandiana (Kakadu plum) Fruit Extract*, Hamamelis virginiana (Witch Hazel), Extract, Glycyrrhiza glabra (Liquorice) Extract ORGANIC Punica granatum (Pomegranate) Sterols, Garcinia mangostana (Mangosteen) Extract, Centipedia Cunninghami Extract (Old mans weed)*, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Undaria pinnatifida (kelp) Extract ORGANIC CI 77491 Benzyl Alcohol Phenoxyethanol Dehydroacetic , Acid Lactic Acid d-Limonene

How to use the Sand & Sky purifying pink clay mask?

As with any mask, you should always start by cleaning and exfoliating. Why? This will clean the skin and open the pores ready to absorb the mask, and having already cleaned the skin as much as a cleanser and exfoliant can, it means the mask can just get to work deep into the pores without anything else getting in the way. Maximum benefit!

I cleansed with my Mario Badescu Acne Facial Cleanser which I reviewed way back when, here, and exfoliated with my Mario Badescu Almond and Honey Face Scub, reviewed here!

The mask smells really almondy, similar to the Mario Badescu Honey Face Scrub that I used which is really weird seeing as the mask doesn’t contain any almond… anyway, just something I noticed but it smells lovely non the less!

Now for the fun part.. I used the little brush that comes with the mask to apply, using a brush is so much easier to apply the mask evenly and also means you don’t get product all over your hands. I hate it when I buy a mask and then have to wash away half the product thats got stuck in-between my fingers, it just feels like such a waste!

THERE WAS TEA IN THE CUP I PROMISE!

I made a massive error here and waited until the mask was completely set to take a photo! Honestly, this mask goes rock solid and really does tighten your face! Jack walked into the office just as I was writing this post with it on and made me laugh so the whole things cracked before I got to take a photo – rookie mistake! I was literally smiling and laughing with him and my face wasn’t even moving!

It took around 15 mins for the mask to be completely dry in all areas, I put a little too much on my cheeks so they were the last to dry, but at least they did dry! I find some clay masks just never set in some places no matter how long you leave it on for. I decided to remove the mask using cotton pads soaked in warm water. Usually with masks I just use warm water and splash my face until its all been removed, I feel like its the most gentle way to get rid of all the product, but seeing as this mask sets so tightly and hard I thought the extra help of the pads would be appreciated… and they were. As soon as the warm pad was pressed into my skin the mask came away really easily and I had removed it all within about a minute, using 4 pads and patting dry with a towel.

Generally, I’m dubious of brands that pave their way via social media. A lot of the influencers I follow promise to never do paid promotions unless its a product they really believe in, which is great, but I’m sure we all follow those certain reality stars which give paid promotions a bad name, and who clearly promote whatever is offered to them regardless of their audience or beliefs – for the sake of an easy pay day. So when Sand & Sky came out storming all over Instagram with everyone and anyone promoting it I did think, it this something thats going to work or is it a fad thats here today and gone tomorrow? Like all of the charcoal toothpaste’s that seemed to be everywhere last year and is nowhere to be found now!

AFTER MASK

Im really pleased to say that I am very happy with the results! After inspecting my pores with my little hand mirror I would definitely say that have reduced in size, not dramatically, but after one use I wouldn’t expect them to disappear in 15 minuets anyway. My skin still feels tighter even after removing the mask, and to touch my skin feels smooth with even moisture levels, there are no patches that are really dry and it has gotten rid of the excess oil that was previously between my brows and on my nose – so thats good! I would definitely say this is a mask for purifying and balancing the skin, however the mask also claims to brighten and I found that for me, it has given a much more mattifying effect. I think this would be a good mask to use before an event or a night out to give your makeup a really nice, smooth and balanced base. But it isn’t one I would use to give me glowing, radiant skin, it just hasn’t done that at all for me! I like the effect of the mask and how its worked but if you’re looking for a ‘detoxifying + brightening’ mask as this claims, I wouldn’t hold out for the brightening part.

PORES AFTER

I hope this has been useful to anyone who has seen this all over the web and wondered if it was worth the hype! I can see myself using this regularly (however maybe not the 3 times per week they recommend! That seems excessive to me… ) and I’m glad that I have it in my collection.

I found the Sand & Sky purifying pink clay mask in a number of retailers, but at the point of writing this post Harvey Nichols and Beauty Bay are the cheapest of the bunch (by 40p but still, every little helps!).

Harvey Nichols and Beauty Bay £39.50

Sand & Sky, Boots and Cult Beauty £39.90

Let me know below if you have tried the Sand & Sky mask or any of their other products! Did you think it did everything it claimed to do?
