THE 6 BEST FOUNDATIONS ON THE MARKET RIGHT NOW

Hi Lovelies,

Since I started wearing foundation in high school its fair to say I have tried A LOT of different foundations. From high street to high end, I have had my share of tide lines and every shade of orange under the sun, nobody got it right at first! Foundation is such an important part of makeup but it is so hard to find the ‘perfect’ foundation. I really think its worth trying as many different foundations as you need until you find one that is perfect for you, it doesn’t matter how well you do your eyes, brows or lips – if the complexion is all wrong its hard to make everything come together like it should. I get it, its hard! Pretty much every single brand does their own foundation line, there so much to choose from – where do you even start???

I get asked all the time what foundation I wear or what foundation I recommend, so out of all the foundations I have tried, from Maybelline to La Mer I have narrowed it down to  my top 6 foundations. I love them all for slightly different reason and I’m pretty sure all of mine are in slightly different shades, for when I’m tanned to when I’m super pale!

I have always liked quite a full coverage foundation but I have never liked the cakey look… who does? My favorite foundations are those that are buildable. Use sparingly and you can achieve a very light coverage, a little more and you’re covered from day to night – the best of both worlds! All of the below foundations are SO easy to blend, they don’t dry down before you get chance to look in the mirror so theres no worries in that department! Don’t get me wrong, every person has different skin, different requirements and different preferences – but these are my top 6 foundations.

****** Having worked in retail myself I just wanted to put a little “please note” here. When you’re trying a new foundation ALWAYS get a colour match by the artists on counter. If theres a que for a colour match it is worth going away and coming back later. If you choose to buy a shade without a match, use it, and it isn’t the right shade, you don’t have any right to then return that product. No matter how much or little you use, it can’t be resold, and it isn’t the counter/shop/brands fault that you chose the wrong colour for your skin. If you get a colour match in store and you aren’t quite sure, tell the artist! Don’t go along with it just because you feel obliged, make sure you check the colour in natural light, walk the front of the store and check in a mirror if you have to. The foundation you buy is going to be on your face nearly every day for at least a month, so it needs to be right. Another thing, unfortunately sometimes you buy a product and you don’t like it, and thats a shame, especially if it wasn’t the cheapest of products, but unfortunately for us you can’t return a used product because you decided you just don’t like it anymore. If there is no fault with the product itself you can’t return it, so if you need to ask for a sample and try the foundation properly at home – DO!******

  1. YSL Touche Éclat Le Teint Foundation

Full Coverage, 22 shades, £35

I first started using this foundation just over three years ago and its safe to say I’m stocked up in a range of shades! When I started using this I realised how how much my previous foundations hadn’t been working for me! It is full coverage but light, easily buildable, radiant and second skin effect. The only downside I sometimes find to this is that the YSL Touche Éclat Le Teint foundation can go a little greasy in areas, but this is easily fixed with a little powder. I don’t usually wear powder over my foundation so if you do, this wont be a problem, but I found that after a full day on my feet at work I would look a tad shiny by the end of the day. I constantly alternate between foundations but every time I wear YSL Touche Éclat Le Teint foundation I get asked what I am using by friends, family and even strangers – no joke. 2-3 pumps can give you a full coverage finish all over your face.

I use shades B20, B40 and B50. YSL counters are incredibly good at giving you a colour match and letting you take a sample to try at home, so don’t be afraid to ask if you just aren’t sure! Most YSL counters will let you take a sample home of the colour you purchase so that you can use the sample before opening the full size foundation, so that you know you’re 100% happy.

2. NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation

Medium – Full coverage, 20 shades, £35

When this foundation came out it was credited for being the longest wearing luminous finish foundation on the market, and it definitely lives up to its reputation. The foundation sets semi matte, so it is still luminous but it isn’t at all shiny, with no glittery particles. Part of what makes this foundation so, so nice is how weightless it is, but this also means I find I have to use quite a few pumps of the Nars All Day Luminous Weightless foundation for a full coverage, so although it is classed as a full coverage I would say it is more medium-full, purely because of how many pumps I have to use for the desired effect. I have to use up to 6 pumps to get the full coverage effect I’m after, however this is using a beauty blender which does soak up some of the formula. Nars say that the All Day Luminous Weightless foundation wear time is 16 hours – and I would absolutely stand by that! Not only does it last all day with absolutely no budging, it doesn’t go greasy at all no matter how busy you are. This foundation also contains no SPF, which means it has no flash back when taking a photo – thats your selfies taken care of!

I use shade Santa Fe. NARS as a brand aren’t allowed to give out samples unless the counter has some in NARS packaging which includes the ingredients, so don’t be offended if you ask and the artist says no, they aren’t being mean – they genuinely aren’t allowed to! For this reason I would 100% recommend finding the time for a colour match before you purchase.

3. GIORGIO ARMANI Luminous Silk Foundation

Medium coverage, 24 shades, £42

You have no idea how much I wanted to not like this foundation. Because of the famous Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation being £42 a pop, for a sheer/medium coverage foundation I wanted to hate it, but what happened? I went and fell in love with it! I really feel like Giorgio Armani undersell the coverage of their Luminous Silk Foundation, a little goes a long way and it doesn’t take much to build this up to being full coverage. I would say 1/2 pumps is light/medium coverage, 3/4 and you have yourself a full coverage foundation… thats less than I need to make the above “full coverage” foundation, full coverage! Silky in consistency, light on the skin, dries down quickly, and makes you glow in all the right ways, I don’t even know how it does it, but it instantly makes you and your skin look so bright eyed and bushy tailed its just an instant fave. Definitely worth the money. Because I have a lot of other foundations I save this one for best… or for days when I feel my worst but want to look my best!

I use shade 3.5. Giorgio Armani are also great for being able to give samples, but I feel like this one is so reliable and doesn’t change much in terms of drying down to a different shade so a colour match from the professionals should do the job!

4. DIOR Forever Undercover 24H Full Coverage Foundation

Full coverage, 26 shades, £34

So, weirdly enough I definitely have to say that this is the best smelling foundation of the bunch! Im not sure how great that is for your skin… but it does smell really nice. I really love Dior and all of their products, and this one is no different. It’s a very reliable foundation for when I know I want my skin to look nice and don’t have to think about it too much, it goes on, does the job, and bob’s your uncle. The coverage is full, however similar to the YSL Touche Éclat Le Teint, I find it goes a tad greasy around the nose and forehead area throughout the day if I’m having a day of rushing around. Another thing, this foundation does not last 24 hours on me, it lasts throughout the day but I definitely wouldn’t be able to go from day to night like some of the others I have mentioned in this post, I find as the day goes on it slightly oxidizes too. The Dior Forever Undercover 24H Full Coverage foundation is a water based foundation, and the formula contains twice as much pigment as Dior’s other foundations (which might add to why I find it oxidizes), so a little really does go a long way! This foundation is more on the matte side but has teeny tiny glitter particles in which keeps you looking nice and fresh rather than ashy and flat.

I use shade 021. Dior are another brand who are usually well stocked with samples so you can get a colour match in store or take one home to try – customer service on Dior counters is second to non so I would highly recommend visiting your local store and speaking to one of the artists, they make you feel like a VIP!

5. YSL All Hours Foundation

Full coverage, 22 shades, £35

The YSL All Hours foundation is such a nice formula it’s no wonder there was so much hype surrounding this when it first got released. The formula itself is similar to the Touche Éclat Le Teint in that a little goes a long way, and it blends super easily, however it is a lot more reliable in that it doesn’t go greasy half way through the day no matter how busy you are. It is a matte finish which is why I have both of the YSL foundation’s in my collection – they both serve different purposes! The foundation makes your skin look smooth and blurs any imperfections, lasting all day without budging. Matte doesn’t mean dead! Although this dry’s to a matte finish the YSL All Hours Foundation still makes your skin look alive. Thumbs us to YSL. Out of my two YSL foundations I use this one for a night time and the le teint for the daytime.

I use shade B40.

6. NARS Sheer Glow Foundation

Light coverage to whatever coverage you desire, 40 shades, £33

Who hasn’t heard of the Nars Sheer Glow Foundation? This is a great everyday foundation, purely because the coverage can literally be whatever you want it to be! It starts as quite a light, sheer coverage but with a few more pumps its easy to make this into a full coverage foundation with all the glow and luminosity a girl could ask for! Don’t be afraid to keep building this up, because the formula is so light theres no risk of the foundation looking cakey and it blends incredibly well. If you have dry skin this is a great foundation because it is also super hydrating, containing glycerin, Vitamin C, turmeric extract and antioxidants. The Nars Sheer Glow foundation has no issues when it comes to evening out skin tone and making you look energized and flawless all at the same time. Reliability at its best!

  1. I just tried the NARS sheer glow foundation and the finish is so beautiful! I love it so much, I got it as a Sephora sample. I’m kind of sad that I like it so much because Nars is so expensive 😦
